What causes Jaw Pain & TMJ issues?
TMJ stands for “TemporoMandibular Joint” – the joint of your jaw. Pain or dysfunction of this joint is often labelled TMJ syndrome or TMJ dysfunction. These issues can be very painful & start to affect other areas of the body as this joint interacts with the cranium, neck & spine. If there is no obvious cause of your jaw pain that can be identified by a medical doctor (such as infection or illness), then other possible causes are trauma, stress or past injuries. In these cases Craniosacral Therapy can be very effective.
Trauma
Jaw pain can result when there has been surgery, dental work or anything else that creates trauma. This is particularly evident when the dental work or surgery was stressful in any way. Muscles of the jaw can tighten as part of the trauma response. Fight or flight is a common trauma response, and when unresolved can result in tight muscles, fatigue, hypersensitivity, irritability, impaired sleep & feelings of overwhelm.
Stress
The jaw & teeth are areas we tend to clench subconsciously when under stress. Many clients report waking in the morning to find they have been clenching during the night. If there has been a particularly stressful event or stressful period in your life this pattern can result. It may be that your nervous system is not able to down-regulate properly.
Injury
Unresolved injuries can cause jaw pain. This can be a recent injury or an injury of the past. Sometimes the body doesn’t fully move on from old injuries and it can affect the surrounding area or nearby areas in the body. The injury doesn’t need to be to the jaw itself. A good example of this is a fall on the tailbone which often creates misalignment at the other end of the spine – the head, neck & jaw.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a soft tissue treatment that works to release trauma, stress & deep tension patterns in the body – often the cause of jaw pain. The practitioner uses very light contact to work with the craniosacral system – the inherent tissue movements of the body.
Places of contact are often the feet, head and sacrum (tailbone), but the therapist will work where it is most appropriate to address your issue. A typical treatment is usually around 40 minutes.
